about

+ video art by Ruxandra Mitache for track 12: vimeo.com/439950123 +

* now available on spotify: play.spotify.com/album/6qwW8rJF9JtBmTFRT17uSG *

..

This album was created with nsynth (aiexperiments.withgoogle.com/sound-maker) which uses machine learning to create impossible instruments. These are not layered together: underlying qualities of sound are recombined so that a new sound is, for example, both a string instrument and a wind instrument; both a digital synth and a cat.

Primarily I wanted to create something that highlighted the uniqueness of this approach to sound generation. Hopefully I've given the tracks space enough to allow this.

I wanted to re-humanize the source - to allow some emotional resonance to come through, to be enjoyable, and yet allow that otherworldliness to intermingle. I see generative music as a collaboration between man and machine; an interdependence.

In other places I've used more traditional methods to recombine and skew nsynth instruments: reverb, delay, guitar distortion, resampling, dissonance etc.
my question here is: are we able to subjectively tell the difference between impossible instruments and electroacoustic methods?

nb. while I've used a lot of fx in places the sound sources were only from nsynth.
