about

some thoughts on liner notes

i like them . i like reading them and i think -especially with with electronic , ambient [non(semi?)representational ] music- it adds a sense of personality identity structure and theme that is missing from the music itself ---or at least is hiiden under a mulch if fx

i dont like writing liner notes

not when im embarking on something like a weekly album project (nearly at a 100 now!!!)) but then where have i explicitly stated this? bandcamp is designed so as not to write a bio. it shows like 3 lines of text and you have to click ' ...more ' i would guess very few do.

i think liner notes are an anachronism in one sense -yeah im of an age where i pored over the j card .. i unfurled it after removing it from the cassette case like a scroll something containing wisdom.[ (add contrasting rant about mp3s here)]

but is writing about music analogous to explaining comedy? a false whats the word dichotomy i think.

both. sometimes an album speaks for itself. i try to use evocative appropriate titles that add something that highlight any depth.

im more interested in that rather than: a description of hardware software instruments used irrelevant -selfish really, a lot of people like that. but i've forgotten what i did v. soon after. poor memory misspent youth blahbvlahblsh i want to get at something. i want something to rise up out of what i'm doing. an autobigraphical auto-writing a sense of it being an audio diary that has flow and immediacy but contains something of me

and that goes back to not writing notes - i want to do something that says something. without saying something. christ im not turning this into lyrics.

i like adding soemthing poetic something not difficult but multilayered that can be added to from a listeners subjective awareness. every thing you hear is a remix hold on that deserves a paragraph:

everything you hear is your remix

your ears do not directly hear the world. it is ordered by your brain. meaning is added, judgments , recognition, memories all affect what you hear. so too writing something too direct and stubborn stringent. something shorter softer indistinct (or longer meandering contradictory uncertain{->youarehere<-]} tangential ) has the effect of asking for collaboration with the other with the listener to add something of themself. my partner will here a couple of ambient notes and start hummng some pop song which is hilarious and appropriate (and annoying)

to degeneralize here : this is an audio diary of a week in july - let your own experiences meld with it (but dont expect me to credit you on the album.)
