been thinking about what ambient means to me
and its kind of contradictory and changes depending on how i'm feeling and who i'm talking to:

A concept that is in constant oscillation between focus and background. Like an ambiguous figure that is perceived differently moment to moment. Music where meaning is subjectively deconstructed and reconstructed continuously

Or:
A distillation of other genres
I've got into ambient through many routes
Rave - chill out - ambient
Big beat - trip hop - ambient
instrumental hip hop - idm - ambient electronica
Post rock - drone - ambient
Rock - acoustic - instrumental

If I ask myself honestly:
Music as depression: numb, indistinct, distant, melancholy, slow, heavy

When I'm meditating on sound:
Everything is ambient

When a client asked me the other day
Kind of chilled out electronic stuff

When my partner asks me what even is this
Dunno sweety you tell me
